Emmeline cried like never before. She felt like she was at the end of her tether, betrayed and conned by everyone. She was bested, and she didn’t care for that sentiment one bit.

Unfortunately, she didn’t know how to turn things around. She didn’t know how to turn this defeat to her advantage.

She honestly didn’t know what to do anymore. Everything she’d managed to think of brought no results. More accurately, it didn’t bring her any results and turned to shit.

Maybe I should admit defeat, ask for forgiveness. Although she wouldn’t mean it, she would pretend she’d had a minor breakdown caused by stress, and live with this impostor for the rest of her life.

That thought only made her cry harder. She didn’t want to do that. She wanted to expose him. She wanted to win. No matter how hard it was to admit, even to herself, she was running out of options; she was running out of ideas to bring the impostor down.

No matter what she did, he was always one step ahead of her. Like he knew her well, like he was the real Jeffrey. Emmeline shook her head at that; she knew he wasn’t her Jeffrey. She wouldn’t let her despair make her doubt herself. She knew what the truth was, and she would stick by it.

It was kind of eerie that he’d managed to anticipate her every move, block her from gathering any kind of evidence against him. Then again, he wouldn’t be a good criminal mastermind if that were not the case.

Am I sure he is a criminal mastermind? She had another moment of doubt.

So far, he hadn’t done anything nefarious, not even to her, and she was the loudest opponent he had. The only opponent he has, she corrected.

More to the point, he was going out of his way to show her he was the real deal, her true husband, the one and only Jeffrey Keller.

Then again, he really didn’t have to do anything more nefarious than he’d already done, taking over her husband’s life, she pointed out to herself.

Regrettably, she had no clue, no means of proving it. He’d managed to corrupt everything, leaving her with nothing. Leaving her with contradictory thoughts and emotions.

Wiping away her tears, Emmeline stood up and walked toward the small bar in the corner of the living room. There she had various drinks and hard liquors at her disposal. Matthew was a strong believer they should be able to prepare cocktails while on vacation, so every cabin came with a fully stocked minibar. Emmeline wasn’t much of a drinker, yet she was grateful for that philosophy now. Because she really needed a drink. No, she needed to get drunk.

Not bothering to mix anything, she grabbed a bottle of tequila and returned to bed.

Opening the bottle, she started drinking, not bothering to pour it in a glass first. The liquor burned her throat, but she didn’t care. She desperately needed something to numb her senses, to slow down her brain, and forget, at least for a while, that she’d lost.
